Study concludes that many top news sites don't do RSS well

E&P - NEW YORK A new study from the International Center for Media and Public Agenda, looking at 19 top news sites, released today concludes that RSS feeds work very poorly for anyone who uses news for more than infotainment.

Cited as among the best users of RSS: The Los Angeles Times, ABC News, Christian Science Monitor, BBC World Service and Fox News.

Among the worst: Al Jazeera, The Guardian and The New York Times.

Rather than RSS, the study found, casual news consumers users should
just stick with Google's Top Stories.

"The problem," the study concludes, "is that many news outlets don't want to share all the news that's on their site—especially stories that are not staff-written or produced. One reason may be that such stories, such as those by AP or Reuters, don't carry the 'brand' of the news organization. But without those stories, many RSS feeds are not truly delivering news 24/7 and, in addition, lack the breadth of news their home sites deliver.

"As a result, RSS users have no idea what they're missing. The study
illuminated how difficult it was to get even all of the staff-generated
stories from "today" via RSS feeds. And without going back to the home
site and checking, a user doesn't know exactly what is NOT being sent
via the RSS feeds. What's more, the study uncovered, just because two
separate news outlets both have feeds labeled "International" hardly
means that they have decided to send the same type or quantity of news
through their feeds."

Full study here.

Google expands personalization with iGoogle

Reuters - Google Inc. is stepping up efforts to allow its users to personalize how they search the Web, moving beyond the one-size-fits-all approach to search it already offers.

Officials told reporters at Google's Silicon Valley headquarters on Monday of moves to allow users to share their own writings, photos, lists and other creative efforts, as well as to give consumers personalized views of the Web through use of their geographical location and search history.

The world's top provider of Web search services is bringing together the more idiosyncratic approach to finding information on the Internet under the umbrella term "iGoogle," the new name for its enhanced personalized home page services.

"We want to personalize the traditional notion of search," Sep Kamvar, lead engineer for the personalization push, told reporters. "I am an eclectic person. But everyone is. We can't go about designing products for the average person."

Reinventing the classic Google.com home page -- with its simple, uncluttered design -- the company is introducing features that range from colorful new Web page designs to helping users publish their own creative content.

Google is borrowing or reinventing ideas that have already become popular features on many social network sites such as MySpace, Facebook, Flickr, Bebo and Photobucket, where users are encouraged to share their own creative work with friends.

To help users create personalized features on iGoogle, the company introduced "Gadget Maker," which allows any user who knows how to upload a photo and fill out a simple Web form to publish their content without knowing computer coding.

Google introduced seven templates for creating personalized "gadgets" -- publishing features -- that include tools for publishing photos, sending virtual greeting cards or creating personal profiles or lists of favorite songs or films.

"I look at personalized search and I think it is one of the biggest advances we have had in the last couple of years," Marissa Mayer, Google's vice president in charge of search and user experience, told a news briefing.

Google's personalized home page, introduced two years ago, offers users the ability to choose from thousands of regularly updating Web features on one page. Tens of millions of users have signed up so far for the personalized approach to search and they are some of Google's most active users, Mayer said.

KNOW THYSELF

Last week, Google introduced the ability for users to refer back to their personal Web search history over the past several years. The history feature is optional and only for users who give permission to Google to store their Web surfing activity.

Google officials were asked whether users might be shocked to see how much information Google stores on searches.

"Web history tells the user what we (Google) know about you," Mayer replied. "You actually have full insight into what we know," she said, adding that users can delete any personal information they do not want to be recorded from searches.

Google is moving cautiously to avoid the mistakes of a decade ago, when the first wave of Web portals used personalization features on their sites to help marketers target ads rather than giving the user greater control.

"At some point we will turn our attention to advertising," Mayer said, but stressed that iGoogle will remain non-commercial for the foreseeable future.

Google is also introducing a geographic aspect to search results based on the location that users select as their home location on Google Maps.

Users who accept this option will see Google search results that are tailored to their location, so a search for "pizza" will return links to nearby pizza restaurants, not just the most heavily visited pizza sites across the Web.

The company is also expanding the number of countries and languages in which it will offer personalized search services.

This week, iGoogle personalized Web search will be available in 40 countries and 26 languages, up from 22 nations and 15 languages where personalization is now offered, said Jessica Ewing, the product manager for iGoogle.

Canadian online advertising tops $1 billion

Online Ad Revenue Surges Forward As Variety Of Factors Combine for Growth

TORONTO, April 30, 2007 - The Interactive Advertising Bureau of Canada (IAB) today announced that 2006 Canadian Online Advertising Revenues surged to an unprecedented $1.01 billion dollars for the year. The 2006 actuals represent a 26% increase over the $801 million originally estimated by the IAB for 2006; and an 80% increase over the 2005 actuals of $562 million.

Of the $1.01 billion, approximately $208 million or 21% of ad dollars were allocated to the French Canadian Online market, representing growth of 68% over the 2005 actuals of $124 million.

2006 Canadian Online Ad Revenue by Advertising Vehicle, was as follows:

  • Display advertising (including banner CPM and direct response advertising, plus contests, sponsorship and microsites) - 36%;
  • Search advertising - 35%;
  • Classifieds/Directories - 27%; and,
  • Email - 2%
In actual millions of dollars, 2006 vs. 2005 Canadian Online Ad Revenue by Advertising Vehicle, was as follows:

2006 2005 Change
Display $364M $230M 58%
Search $353M $197M 79%
Classifieds $273M $124M 120%
Email $20M $11M 82%

2006 Canadian Online Ad Revenue by Advertiser Category was also tabulated, and was as follows:
  • Automotive - 16%;
  • Consumer Packaged Goods - 14%;
  • Entertainment (Music, Film, TV) - 9%;
  • Financial - 16%;
  • Leisure (Travel, Hotel, Hospitality) - 14%;
  • Retail - 16%; and,
  • Other - 15%
What accounts for the 80% jump in 2006 vs. 2005 revenue figures? IAB Canada and Ernst & Young LLP (who tabulated results from the double-blind survey), cite a number of critical factors leading to the increase, including:

1. Substantial Revenue Growth Across All Publishers:
  • Small and Medium publishers (who typically net between $500k to $5M/yr.) showed an average revenue growth of 85% vs. 2005;
  • Large publishers (who typically net between $5M to $30M/yr.) showed an average revenue growth of 155% vs. 2005; and,
  • Very Large publishers (who typically net between $30M to $100M/yr.) showed an average revenue growth of 62% vs. 2005.
2. Revenue Growth Within Online Ad Networks:
  • 2006 saw substantial growth in revenue for both US and Canadian networks selling "Canadian eyeballs" aggregated across U.S. and Canadian sites.
3. More Integration, New Advertisers, New Advertising Choices and New Ad Formats:
  • More integrated campaigns; more new, blue-chip advertisers entering the market for the first time; more advertising choices for Search; uptake of rich media; and, the addition of video pre-roll advertising to the selection of Online advertising tools, all helped drive the industry forward.
"Add to all of this, results from the 7 CMOST (cross-media optimization) research studies that the IAB has undertaken over the past 4 years, plus the fact that in the past two years alone, over 1,000 senior-level advertiser, agency and publisher representatives have taken the IAB's Intensive One-Day Course in Interactive Marketing and Online Advertising -- and you get a sort of 'perfect storm' that was able to move the Canadian Online advertising dial forward to such an extent," says Paula Gignac, President of IAB Canada.

And there's still more growth to come. IAB Canada's projected total for 2007 Online advertising in Canada, is estimated to be $1.337 billion -- a full 32% more than the 2006 actual of $1.01 billion. "It's interesting," says Gignac. "While it took us 13 years from when the first banner was served on the Internet, until now, to reach the billion dollar mark in Canada, it may only take us another two to three years to reach the second billion. Fascinating times indeed."

About the IAB Canada 2006-07 Canadian Internet Advertising Revenue Report:

The 2006 actual revenues and the 2007 estimated revenues were reached after a comprehensive survey of all major Online publishers in Canada. Revenue data was compiled and analyzed by Ernst & Young LLP.
